About the Book
Beyond the Unexpected Changes in Late Life is my second publication on late-life wellbeing. After writing Beyond the Reluctant Move, I knew my writing journey was not over. There was more I wanted to share, to celebrate the lives of those no longer with us. I feel privileged to support elders through the late years of their lives, and their wisdom and insights help shape my work.
This book shares recent research and insights into wellbeing during the later years, regardless of where a person may live or whether they receive support with daily activities. It is intended for a wide range of audiences, including those living independently, with relatives, or travelling in a caravan without a fixed address. The book is also valuable for caregivers, care managers, health professionals, families, and volunteers.
Through shared stories and insights from elders, Beyond the Unexpected Changes in Late Life offers easy suggestions to boost emotional, social, and physical engagement. It thoughtfully addresses unexpected bumps in late life and provides ways to maintain vibrant, fulfilling lives. Subtle changes in health and wellbeing may prompt the need to outsource tasks like lawn maintenance or domestic assistance with cleaning.
I have met many elders in aged care homes who faced unexpected and unwelcome roadblocks. Entering residential care was not something they envisioned, and the sudden change can profoundly impact their emotional wellbeing. This book provides strategies to navigate life after such changes, helping individuals continue to experience rich lives filled with physical, social, and cognitive activities.
